The glass panels lining the interior and exterior of the San Diego Superior Court building have recently been spontaneously breaking.

According to NBC San Diego, a 14th floor panel shattered in place in May and two more panels have either exploded or broken since then.

One interior panel broke in August before the glass fell out and landed inside the courthouse a few days later.

Perhaps even more alarming is the fact that no one has been able to determine the cause of the shattering panes of glass.

Tempered glass manufacturer One Day said panels can spontaneously break due to edge damage, nickel sulfide stones or extreme impact.

To protect employees and the public, a canopy is being installed on all sides of the building and above the entrance plaza.

The courthouse has also put up interior safety barriers in the locations where panels recently broke.
