MONTICELLO – A 33-year-old Monticello man has been charged with breaking into vehicles by smashing out windows and stealing property inside them.

Monticello Police caught Phillip Jacobs hiding in the back seat of one of the vehicles that had been broken into early Thursday morning.

He was charged with five counts of criminal possession of stolen property, four counts of criminal mischief, criminal possession of a controlled substance and petit larceny.

Jacobs was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail, $40,000 bail bond or $60,000 secured insurance bond.

Police said additional charges are expected.

Jacobs was arrested following several complaints of vehicles being broken into. On Wednesday, officers on patrol checking the Short Line bus terminal lot on Sturgis Road discovered 12 vehicles that had windows broken out.

At 2:30 Thursday morning, officers discovered another three vehicles had been broken into and Phillips was discovered hiding in one of them. He was found in possession of credit and debit cards that had been stolen and were used or had been attempted to be used at different businesses. He was also illegally in possession of heroin and a crack pipe when arrested.
