Hidden updates, Windows firewall etc. – Windows 7 – BleepingComputer

Good day,

This is a bit of a follow up to the post, https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/773815/endless-configuring-windows-updates/

It required help from the escalation team, but EAM was un-installed (because they no longer support Windows 7.)  I took John C_21’s advice to install Bitdefender Antivirus free, and that’s working well I think.  However when EAM was gone, Windows Defender kept trying to activate but I thought I got it quieted.  However now, at Windows Update, KB915597 Security Intelligence Update for Windows Defender Antivirus (snip attached) keeps re-appearing. I hide it and it goes away for a few days, but pops up continuously even though I’ve never re-activated or used Windows Defender.  Do I just keep hiding it?

Secondly, while using Bitdefender Antivirus do I need to also use Windows firewall?

Thirdly, there’s another hidden update “Microsoft Bing Service 1.0 to 2.0 Update”.  I do use Edge occasionally but don’t trust Bing for anything.  Is there any reason to do the Bing update?

[Still working on purchasing a new laptop with Windows 10 or 11, but HP models that I can see well – with at least 12 GB RAM and 512 SSD – are simply hard to find…the ones I’ve seen are all “silver”, the whole thing is silver, and even in bright light you have to be at a certain angle to see the keyboard properly; being seated at a desk, with the laptop on the desk, the letters/numbers on the keyboard are simply not visible.  In low light or at an angle, the keyboard is impossible to deal with when the keyboard and whole laptop are the same color.  Obviously I can use an external keyboard as I’m doing now, but it’s awkward to have to take an external keyboard to use with a laptop, defeats the purpose really.]

Thank you.
